I have my mother and father to thank.  My father -artist, geologist, white-water kayaking pioneer, instilled in me a love of the outdoors and adventure.  He taught me about rocks and trees, took me camping, canoeing and kayaking.  He showed me the pleasure of being confident in my skills, of trusting myself and my body.

I was one of those girls in love with horses.  It took me until I was 7 to get one of my own and I was not much older when I decided that my way to make a difference was to become a vet.  A horse vet, of course.   My unswerving determination served me well-I graduated valedictorian of my high school with scholarships to UC Davis-zoology major, pre-vet.  I took every horse class I could.  I loved it, it was all so fascinating, but when I went to work in the horse barns at the vet school I quickly became very disillusioned.  I guess I had not really understood that a veterinarian studies and practices medicine.  That medicine and surgery are a prominent part of practice.  This was not consistent with my way of thinking about health and wellness, for me or for animals. What to do?I continued pursuing my horse studies.  One advanced class I wanted required a nutrition class as a prerequisite.  I fell in love.  I found it miraculous how our bodies could take a food and change it into living flesh.  How we process different things differently.  How we get rid of what we don’t need.  My understanding of these process and the implications of our lifestyle and diet choices would deepen greatly as I journeyed with my mother through breast cancer and her search for answers.  She studied with Anne Wigmore in Boston introducing me to wheat grass and the powerful concepts of living foods.   We traveled to Mexico so she could receive care at the Gerson Clinic.  Here we took classes and learned about the miracle of fresh juices.  While at the Gerson Clinic I met a recent chiropractic graduate there with his father.  It was from our lengthy discussions on nutrition, chiropractic, health and wellness that committed me to chiropractic.  I was inspired by the basic tenets of chiropractic, the innate healing capacity of the body, the expression of health from the inside out. Above, down, inside, out.  It all made sense to me, tying together so many of the pieces of my upbringing.  I loved and excelled at school, graduating magna cum laude.

Part way through school I married my sweetheart, Andrew Downey, fellow traveler, visionary and very bold adventurer.  Committed to ourselves, each other and the service of others in the pursuit of health and expanding wellbeing, the adventure in always close at hand.  Together we continue to explore the natural world-both inside and out joined now by our two exceptionally intelligent and healthy boys.

Learning.  Sharing.  Serving.  Making a difference.
